Falmouth Spring Flower Show
History and Archive
The committee and members formed in 1909 but the first Falmouth Spring Flower Show was 1910
and apart from some temporary suspension during World wars I & II, has been non-stop since 1944.
It was almost suspended in 2007, due to the lack of enough able
bodied helpers. However, an appeal launched by the local press produced
sufficient response to boost the workforce to necessary numbers.
Years ago, at the close of the show, the main exhibits were packed and
shipped to major cities like Birmingham, Manchester & Liverpool. They were
then displayed in the large department stores. This meant their customers
were able to see spring flowers way before the local ones were out. A result
of this was the extra boost to Falmouth's tourist trade. This is no longer
done because, in this logistical age, all forms of flowers are relatively common,
in all areas, at all times of year so there is not the same kudos .
The ' Falmouth Show ' is said to be the 1st real flower show on the Cornish calendar.
Why not exhibit in the show if you can, it's FREE, but if not, at least come and look
at others efforts.
